Arîn Mîrkan… Woman who escalated women’s struggle in Middle East
Four years after the commando operation carried out by the martyr Arîn Mîrkan during the resistance of Kobanî, Arîn became the source of strength, confidence and a vanguard for a woman that is capable of resisting the forces of terrorism for Kobanî to become an icon of resistance.
On October 5, 2014 while IS mercenaries were continuing their brutal attacks on Kobanî starting from September 15, 2014, the People and Women Protection Units (YPG and YPJ) made great resistance after IS mercenaries reached with their brutality to Mushta Noor hill on the south-eastern side of Kobanî.
On the same day, while the last moments spent before IS mercenaries would occupy the hill. Arîn Mîrkan, the fighter in YPJ which was stationed on the front of Mushta Noor hill took out her grenades and penetrated into IS ranks to inflict them with heavy losses.
With the martyrdom of Arîn Mîrkan, the fighters of YPJ increased their determination and escalated their resistance to defend their land and values.
The commando operation carried out by Arîn during the Kobanî resistance against IS mercenaries proved to the whole world that women are able to protect their homeland and values.
Arîn Mîrkan whose real name is Delara Kinj was born in 1992 in Husi village in Mobata district in Afrin canton. She joined the ranks of the Kurdistan Liberation Movement in 2007. As Rojava Revolution erupted, she participated in the revolution and took her post among the ranks of YPJ to defend the dignity of her people.
Arîn and many of the fighters such as Revana, Destina, Zozan and the martyrs of Serzori School and Doli hill in addition to other many strugglers who sacrificed their life to liberate this land from terrorism have become a symbol of redemption and struggle against the occupation which feeds on the masculine mentality, and they made of their spirit a shining torch for the women of the Middle East. They also lined great epics in the pages of history.
Arîn’s friend talks about her…
Friday marks the fourth anniversary of the martyrdom of Arîn Mîrkan. In coincidence with this anniversary, her comrade Gulan Sasson tells our agency about Arîn’s resistance and how her operation has affected the women in Rojava, especially the women in the Middle East in general.
“The fighter Arîn had a consolidated national spirit and thought. She was vigilant and with high sense of responsibility. She believed in the philosophy and thought of the Kurdish people leader Abdullah Ocalan which led her to have a strong will and determination to resist and sacrifice with high morale,” said Gulan Sasson, a fighter in YPJ.
Gulan Sasson added, “Arîn was the source of morale to all the fighters on the fronts of the battles by what she was talking about; the history of the Kurdish struggle and epics lined by strugglers in the ranks of the Kurdistan Liberation Movement.”
Moments before carrying out the commando operation
Gulan narrates the moments of the resistance of the fighter Arîn Mîrkan in the hill of Mushta Noor as she was in the front trench resisting the fiercest enemies of humanity on the one hand and protecting her comrades on the other hand.
Gulan continued, “Few hours before the operation of Arîn, we were resisting IS mercenaries with all our strength and repelling all their attempts to attack the city’s center, but ammunition ran out. The comrade Arîn sent me to bring it. I walked a few steps and heard the sound of a grenade. I thought that my comrade Arîn martyred and soon I went back. I saw her hidden behind a rock and her smiling face covered with dust. She called me and said “Inspect the place and be careful of the bullets of the mercenaries.” When I looked at the front side, the comrade Arîn had repelled the attack and inflicted heavy losses to the mercenaries.”
Hours later, the fighter in YPJ Gulan was wounded in her head and left the battlefield for receiving the medical treatment. Arîn Mîrkan continued to resist her mercenaries until she reached the moment of freedom with her guerilla spirit.
Soon the news of the comrade Arîn’s commando operation spread which contributed to raising the fighters the level of resistance, and although the battles continued and entered the streets of the city, but dozens of fighters continued resisting and managed after 134 days to defeat IS from Kobanî city.
Kobanî was liberated on 26 January as the victory of the Kobanî resistance was a severe blow to IS mercenaries which contributed to its being collapsed. And today, they are reaching to the end as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are fighting the last battles against IS in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
The operation of Arîn Mîrkan set the foundations of the resistance, adding another resistance made by Avista Khabur when she carried out a guerrilla operation that was described as the moment of freedom. Today, Rojava people continue their struggle against the Turkish occupation army in Afrin with the spirit of Avista and Arîn.
The struggler Gulan added, “Arîn has become a symbol of the resistance of the free women and has become an example and a great honor to us. She has demonstrated the strength and worthiness of women defending their freedom against the masculine mentality that considers women devoid of will and power.”
The guerrilla operation carried out by Arîn Mîrkan in the resistance of Kobanî which was the outcome of the resistance and struggle of Zilan Kenaji who carried out the first commando operation in the history of the Kurdistan Liberation Movement against the Turkish occupation army in June 30, 1996 to become a symbol of free women. Avista Khabur also adopted the path of Zilan and Arîn in the Resistance of the Age to continue the resistance of women in Rojava in the spirit of their resistance.
